A group of Year 4 pupils from Deykin Avenue Junior School have just completed an innovative and creative World Cup themed textiles project at the North Birmingham Academy. The six week long project, which ran every Tuesday afternoon for two and a half hours, focused on teaching the pupils about African patterns and designs to create their own fabrics to be made u[p into a booklet.

The pupils began the multi-cultural project by examining and discussing designs from the countries competing in the World Cup. They then studied African patterns and prints before producing their very own patterns which they transferred onto fabric. They also produced fabric collages using African patterns and printed African-themed designs on fabric.

The Deykin Avenue pupils compiled all of their work into sketchbooks which show off just how much they had created during the six week project. All of the pupils’ work is now on display as a point of pride for both the primary pupils and North Birmingham Academy. The project gave the Year 4 pupils a thorough introduction to textile design which will give them a valuable head-start in the field once they progress to secondary school.

The creative textiles project is just the start of a number of innovative projects that the North Birmingham Academy will be organising as it shares its expertise and facilities with the community and sparks the imaginations of young people.
