Numeracy and arts day
Creative and numerical skills came together during a brilliant new initiative at NBA. Over the course of two days, Years 7 and 8 students were given an imaginary brief, “create a promotional package for Jamelia’s new CD No1.”
Working across the curriculum, students completed a range of tasks in order to meet the brief. In art they produced a CD cover, in dance they created a flash mob for promotion, and in music they created a jingle for the advert. Furthermore, all of their work had to be delivered within a strict budget. Students had to create spreadsheets to keep track of costs and timings for the delivery of each item to see if their ideas were feasible and affordable.
The chance for students to work to a brief within the arts helped them understand how numeracy skills are integral to all areas of the Arts Industries.
