North Birmingham Academy receives praise from Ofsted

North Birmingham Academy is delighted with the outcome of a recent Ofsted monitoring inspection which recognises the excellent gains that have been made in the 15 months since the academy opened.

Below are some of the positive comments made in the Ofsted report:

“The first year of the academy has brought improvements in many key aspects of its work and outcomes for students, and demonstrates its accelerating capacity to improve further.”

“The academy provides excellent support, guidance and care for students.”

“Substantial improvement arose because of the academy’s drive to improve the curriculum and teaching.”

“Current attendance is high and this is consistent across all year groups.”

“The quality of teaching has improved steadily since the academy opened. Of the 20 lessons observed, two thirds were judged good or outstanding and none were inadequate.”

“The curriculum effectively meets the needs of the students, including those in the Sixth Form, and promotes increasingly high aspirations.”

“The longer lessons which the academy has recently introduced are a key element in accelerating progress. Students study topics in depth and have time to apply what they have learnt.  This has promoted deeper thinking and enabled students and teachers to assess progress accurately.”

The academy is at an exciting stage in its development having significantly improved both GSCE and A Level results within one year of opening and with the majority of our A Level students securing university places. Students and staff have also gained many awards for their academic, sporting, cultural and artistic success.

Earlier this year, the academy received two Leading Aspect Awards: one for the induction of newly qualified teachers and another for work on the inclusion of students and their personal development. The academy is also being used as an example of good practice for teaching and learning, curriculum design, attendance and data safeguarding. Excitingly, work on state-of-the-art new buildings for the academy will commence soon and will be completed in early 2013.

Commenting on the recent Ofsted, Principal Kim Popratnjak said:

“The outcome of this Ofsted monitoring visit is fantastic and a testament to the commitment, skills and hard work of our exceptional staff and the support of our governors and families. We are determined to build on the successes achieved to date and to continue to support our students’ to achieve beyond expectations within a positive, challenging and caring environment.”
