Mathematics

The Mathematics Department is a forward thinking department of North Birmingham Academy which is continually exploring new ways to present the subject in a stimulating and innovative way.  Our team of teachers is committed to ensuring that each student feels valued and fulfils his/her potential and succeeds in SATs and GCSE examinations.

The Department also hopes that students will come to appreciate that whilst being an important tool in other subjects, Mathematics is a subject in its own right and there is a sense of awe and wonder to behold within its boundaries.

Mathematics is taught by eight enthusiastic subject specialists based in their own classrooms.  All Mathematics rooms are equipped with interactive white boards which enable us to use a wide variety of teaching styles and meet the needs of all students.

The Department seeks to develop a positive attitude towards mathematics by making  it an interesting and attractive subject, giving credit and praise to improve confidence and encouraging students to set themselves challenging targets.

In addition to the statutory curriculum at Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4, we offer national Functional Skills qualifications 14-19 as well as Study Plus at GCSE Higher Level for targeted groups of students.

We are also promoting and exploring enrichment opportunities outside the curriculum to enhance students’ enjoyment of Mathematics e.g. participation in the UK Schools Mathematics Challenge.

Key Stage 3 (Years 7,8 & 9)

Students follow new work schemes which cover the National Curriculum as well as extending Mathematical understanding. There are regular Forms of Assessment, including testing and coursework. Students are taught in sets in accordance to their ability.

Key Stage 4 (Years 10 & 11)

Students follow the new OCR GCSE syllabus A.  This syllabus involves completing 2 pieces of coursework and 2 written papers at the end of Year 11.
